Volunteers have collected more than a half million signatures to qualify the California Cancer Research Act for the ballot. The measure would fund cancer research by raising the tobacco tax by one dollar.
California has not raised the so-called “cigarette tax” for a decade. The coalition of health care officials and health organizations joined former State Senator Don Perata to announce they have enough signatures to put the initiative on the November 2012 ballot.
”This is a huge day,” said American Cancer Society’s C.E.O. David Veneziano. “This has been done strictly by people who are self-interested. Including, scientists, the medical community, the Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, the Heart Association, and a lot of people, and a lot of people who just believe that this is something that California should do.”
He says the California Cancer Research Act will save lives.
”For every ten percent increase in the price of cigarettes, adult consumption will fall four percent, and youth consumption will fall seven percent,” said Veneziano.
Smokers will have to pay $1 more per pack.

This is such bull. A CDC report showed that of the 14 states who raised tobacco taxes in 2009, NONE of them used it for the programs they promised to. It just went into the state coffers and they spent it however they saw fit. The Dems in Sacramento tried to raise the tax through the legislature last year but were unable to get the votes so now they are doing a end-run and putting it on the ballot. Just more money for them to waste instead of cutting their budget the way everyone of us has had to do in these hard times.

Live and let live! Quit trying to control the lives of other people! Many of you in favor of upping the tax on tobacco are probably folks who drink too much alcohol, but are against raising those taxes. What’s next? Socialism is one thing but dictating how people should live and recreacte…Really! And…who is going to monitor your programs? Who is going to account for every dollar that comes to your programs from via tobacco taxes? Sounds like part of the ever expanding government already in place. Get real!
