Oakland Braces for Mehserle Verdict

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)- Several recreation centers will be open in Oakland after a verdict is announced at the murder trial of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle.

Youth will have a safe place to express their feelings in positive ways.

The shooting death of Oscar Grant by a former BART police officer has left a sense of frustration among many youth.

Sikander Iqbal from Youth Uprising in East Oakland says that if the local youth hears a verdict, or that they get something they don't like, that they don't have to settle and that there is "stuff" they can do.

"Anger can be expressed in positive ways without violence. We're trying to get the message out there that this is our city and we want to make sure we keep it that way and that there's no point in destroying it. Instead of destroying our city we should be trying to build our city up," said Iqbal.
