Countries Work Closely on Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) U.S. and Chinese contractors have worked closely in constructing the Bay Bridge, as evidenced by a recent visit by Caltrans officials to Shanghai for the World Fair.

Deck sections for the span as well as the tower for the suspension bridge were built in China.

Bart Ney with Caltrans recently traveled to Shanghai where he made a presentation about construction of the Bay Bridge.

"It showed the teamwork that was necessary for something like this to happen," said Ney. "We have to work right arm-in-arm with the Chinese to build this bridge. This is one of the most difficult bridges ever constructed because of the earthquake standards it has to meet. Because of the aesthetics standards it has to meet."

Ney traveled with the San Francisco Sister City delegation. San Francisco and Shanghai are marking their 30th anniversary as sister cities.[pullquote quote="We have to work right arm-in-arm with the Chinese to build this bridge. " credit="Bart Ney with Caltrans"]

And he said the tower section for the bridge is now at sea.

"We were out there to document the loading of these pieces onto the ship and to officially acknowledge the team that's been working very hard out there for all their effort getting the tower pieces out," Ney said. "It was really a big milestone to be shipping the first part of what we're calling our signature tower out of Shanghai."

That tower section is expected to arrive in the Bay Area by July 11.
