Flag Mural Restored

PLEASANTON, Calif. (KCBS)- The Sunol Grade flag mural that went up after 9/11 and was painted over by Caltrans crews last week has been restored when two men decided to take matters into their own hands.

CBS 5 reports Steve Giordano and Jim Gallagher scaled down the side of the grade yesterday with paint brushes and rollers and to re-paint the stars and stripes in time for Independence Day.

The three artists responsible for the mural had been waiting for a Caltrans permit to restore a popular piece of art that state officials decided had incorrectly classified as graffiti.

One graffiti artist, R.W. Waldron, says that certain types of graffiti are art and considers its makers artists.

"To some people graffiti is an art form. Some graffiti is just tagging that can be associated with gang stuff," said Waldron.

Waldron had received many offers from friends and strangers to help with the painting and supplies for the restoration.
