Suspected Mastermind May Have Had Bailey Witness Hit List

The Chauncey Bailey Project, a group of journalists formed to investigate the killing of Oakland Post Editor Chauncey Bailey in 2007, says that court papers reveal that the former lawyer of the man accused in setting up the murder may have smuggled a hit list of witnesses out of jail.

Yusef Bey IV is being held in the Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of calling for Bailey's death. Bailey was planning an expose on Bey's organization, Your Black Muslim Bakery.

Court papers say Bey's former attorney Lorna Brown took the papers from Bey, including a list of witnesses he wanted killed.

Robert Weisberg, head of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center says Brown could face a misdemeanor.

"What is left unsaid here is what was going on with the list of highlighted witnesses," said Weisberg. "Clearly it's part of a conspiracy to do some very, very bad things is implicated here."

So far no charges have been leveled against Brown.
