Mehserle Sentencing Pushed Back
LOS ANGELES (KCBS) The sentencing date for former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle has been pushed back three months.
A Los Angeles jury convicted Mehserle last week of involuntary manslaughter for shooting Oscar Grant on the Fruitvale BART platform on New Year's Day 2009.
Sentencing had been originally scheduled for August 6, but the court has rescheduled it for November 5.
Defense attorney Michael Rains had asked the judge for a postponement in the date in order to prepare for the hearing.
Rains is expected to argue for a reduced sentence.
Mehserle is facing between five and 14 years in prison after the jury also found him guilty of using a gun while committing a crime.
