Education Coalition Supports Assembly Budget Plan

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) A Bay Area education coalition is endorsing the Assembly's budget proposal, hoping that funding for education will be restored.

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia stood on the steps of Everett Middle School on Thursday, along with representatives from Oakland and Alameda with a message.

"I think its time to say to everybody in our legislature and our governor, show us the money," said Garcia.

The group is endorsing the Assembly plan, which would protect students from further cuts.

"When you look at what they're proposing in the Assembly, it really goes back to restore the formula," said Garcia.

Debbie Look with the California State PTA said that funding is critical.

"We cannot rely on parents and community members fundraising to support critical education programs," said Look.

Cuts to education thus far have included increasing class sizes, eliminating summer school, layoffs of counselors, nurses and teachers and furlough days for those who still have jobs.
