SF Supervisors Look to Gain More Power over Problem Night Clubs

A San Francisco Supervisors' committee today moved forward legislation to give the Entertainment Commission broad new power to police problem night clubs. This comes after several incidents of night life violence.

The latest violence was just a week ago when a man was shot and killed outside Jelly's at Pier 50. Last month, shots were fired into a crowd near El Rincon in the Mission.

Another club, Suede at Fisherman's Wharf is being shutdown by the city attorney because of a multiple shooting there. That's what led to Supervisor David Chiu to propose this legislation to give the city's Entertainment Commission the power to revoke permits.

"There has been a lot of public frustration with the Entertainment Commission, and the fact that we have not been able to get a handle around this situation," said Chiu.

The testimony at the public safety committee was completely in favor of giving the commission more power to punish problem nightclubs.

"I'm very, very encouraged by the legislation you're proposing," said one man. "We can weed out those couple of bad apples, which are quite frankly, making everyone's job miserable."

The legislation, which has been sent to the full board for a vote, would for the first time, give the entertainment commission the power to revoke a permit when a nightclub poses a threat to public safety.
