Proposed SF Measure Means Non-Citizens Could Vote for School Board

San Franciscans who aren't citizens, but have children in the public schools would get to vote in school board elections under a measure that will go to voters this November.

The proposal is by Supervisor David Chiu, who says the same charter amendment that was narrowly defeated by voters six years ago.

"The United State Supreme Court has stated repeatedly that immigrants are allowed to vote, that immigration status is not a bar to exercise the right to vote," said Chiu.

Supervisor Sean Elsbernd voted "," no saying the idea is fine, except that it violates the state constitution.

"As much as San Francisco likes to think of itself as a nation unto itself, actually the state constitution trumps local ordinances," said Elsbernd.

Another ballot measure seeks to increase voter participation by allowing people to both register and vote the same day as the election.
