Strong Reaction to Proposed SJ Pot Tax

San Jose is another city looking at levying a tax on medical marijuana to help raise revenue, but some cannabis club operators say the proposed 10 percent tax rate is way too high.

David Hodges, the founder of the San Jose Cannabis Buyers Collective says he supported a three percent city tax on medical marijuana, but 10 percent is outrageous.

"If it were to be put in place, it would likely drive patients out of town or back to the streets," he said.

The city is considering putting a pot tax on the November ballot after a new poll found many San Jose residents would support the idea.

Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio who originally proposed licensing and taxing medical marijuana says he has no preference on a tax rate.
The city is still working out how to license pot clubs including the number to be allowed within the city limits.
