AC Transit Threatens to Eliminate Weekend Service

AC Transit buses could soon stop running on weekends as management is threatening to halt weekend service if union workers fail to approve millions in contract concessions.

AC faces a two-year, $56 million deficit, and cash flow is tight.

"This isn't a scare tactic, this is reality," said AC Transit spokesman Sam Singer. "The union needs to wake up and see what other public agencies are doing, and what other cutbacks are going on in the economy everywhere. We need them to compromise." Click to Listen

Transit union president Claudia Hudson is hopeful that a judge rules on Friday to overturn a contract imposed on AC employees several weeks ago.

"AC Transit needs to stop blackmailing the public and blaming it on its workers," said Hudson.

Brad McCrea of Oakland is among the thousands who rely on AC's weekend service.

"Not having transit on the weekends would be terrible," said McCrea. "It's important to have transit seven days a week."
