Police Kill Man During Mendocino Pot Raid

A sheriff's officer shot and killed a man during a raid on a large pot garden in a remote part of Mendocino County early Tuesday morning.

Authorities tell the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that the shooting took place on US Forest land near the Tehama County line shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Sheriff's officials say the raid was aided by Forest Service and federal land management officers.

They say they were entering several large marijuana gardens when they encountered two men. One of the men leveled a rifle at police and was shot. Both suspects ran, but the injured man was tackled by a dog that was helping authorities involved in the raid. He was given first aid but died minutes later.

Mendocino County prosecutors and the state Department of Justice are investigating.

The shooting comes a week after deputies fatally shot a suspect during a pot raid in Santa Clara County.
