SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) _ Many airports throughout the country are trying to make it more convenient to travel with pets.

And that includes doggie restrooms popping up, including at San Francisco International Airport.

SFO spokesman Mike McCarron said they have added dog relief stations, discreetly tucked between terminals outside the baggage areas.

“They’re all pre-security. Either as you come in after you’ve been on a flight with your pet or just before you get on a flight with your pet,” he said. “You can take your pet there and let them do their business and happily go on your way.”

McCarron said the stations are also helping animals at the airport that might not be traveling.

“It’s also for our animals we have here at the airport, as far as the K-9 units, the different police dogs, agricultural dogs that we use,” McCarron said.

New federal rules require that airports have pet-relief areas for travelers with service dogs, which has prompted many to add rest stops for the nation’s estimated two million canine air travelers each year.
