SF Schools Adopt Higher Academic Standards

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)_ For some Bay Area students, summer ends next week as school starts Monday in San Francisco.

New high school freshmen will face more academic rigor this year due to altered requirements to eventually get a diploma.

Now there will be necessary "A" through "G" requirements.

The A through G sequence is the coursework that is required for entrance to the University of California and this is the first year that all high schools in the San Francisco district will require the classes be taken to graduate.

Heidi Anderson with the San Francisco Unified School District says for some students it means they'll be taking a few more years of math or a language where they wouldn't have before.

If a student doesn't receive a grade of C or greater in a class, they can still graduate, but would not be eligible for University of California.

Anderson says the district is raising the bar.

"From 9th grade on, the conversation with the counselor is not, should I take these courses, but when will I take these courses to be complete. Right from the get-go, there will be support from the counselors and the teachers to get into those classes and to pass them," added Anderson.

In 2009, half of the district graduated completed the A through G coursework, though it was not required for graduation.
