Walnut Creek Rape Suspect Arrested

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KCBS)_ 22-year-old Antonio Andre Mouton of Berkeley is being held in connection with one charge of rape, two charges of attempted rape, and three counts of burglary.

Investigators say Mouton is responsible for three attacks at the Park Regency Apartments over the last six weeks in unincorporated Walnut Creek.

Detectives say Mouton entered the women's homes and in at least in two of the cases, put his hands over the women's mouths.

A 23-year-old woman was raped on July 6th, while in the other two attacks, the women were able to free themselves and the suspect escaped.

The most recent attack occurred on Tuesday when a 25-year-old victim was awakened by the suspect in her apartment. She struggled with the man before breaking free and sprayed him with pepper spray.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's office held a news conference about the arrest Friday afternoon.

Sheriff's Captain Steve Warren isn't sure why the suspect was in that area or why he selected that area.

"These things are a crime of opportunity, obviously we believe he planned these events," says Warren.

The investigators say DNA testing and witness descriptions link Mouton to the attacks. He was arrested Tuesday night inside a vehicle at the Pittsburg BART station.

Mouton's bail has been set at $12.45 million.
