Rally Held in East Bay to Support Mehserle

DUBLIN, Calif. (KCBS) _ A rally was held on Sunday in support of the former BART police officer convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of unarmed passenger Oscar Grant.

A small group gathered at the Civic Center in Dublin to show their support for Johannes Mehserle.

Counter-demonstrators did not show up and Sherri Mitchell said the group was just looking to gather peacefully, as Mehserle awaits sentencing in Los Angeles.

"Some of us are in law enforcement, some are law enforcement family and friends," she said. "And some are just citizens that are also fed up with it."

Mitchell said they hope the judge goes easy when Mehselre is sentenced in November.

"He had an accident at work and here we're jailing our cops when we should be jailing our criminals," said Mitchell.

This was the third such rally held in the Bay Area in the last month.

Mehserle was convicted by a Los Angeles jury of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale BART station on New Year's Day 2009.
