Latinos Play Major Role in November Election

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KCBS)_ San Jose was Tuesday's stop for a statewide bus tour to get more Latinos registered to vote.

Todos A Votar! is helping to promote the Latino cause as they are expected to play a major role in the November election.

San Jose was the 7th stop on the tour which started in San Diego four days ago. Organizer Eliseo Medina says the big concern now is disillusionment amongst Latino voters.

"People were very hopeful that we'd get something done about immigration reform for example. They were hopeful that we'd get something done about education, and they were hopeful that we'd have a fair budget process, but that hasn't come to pass," says Medina.

Medina also stressed that he doesn't want Latino's disillusionment to turn into cynicism and a lack of participation.

"If that happens, not only do we lose our interest, but democracy suffers," added Medina.

David Hernandez with the California Teachers Association says when it comes to registered voters, Latinos are underrepresented.

"One of our goals is today is to bring awareness to the Latino community about the importance of getting out to vote this November and to share with them the importance of how their vote can make a major impact on the election", says Hernandez.

Hernandez says it's important that Latinos make their voices heard because they've been hit especially heard by the economic crisis.
