San Francisco's Spike in Summer Tourists

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)_ There has been a spike in tourism in San Francisco this summer. Hotel occupancy rates are up nearly eight percent compared to this time last year.

KCBS reports one of the main reasons is more international travelers are visiting the City by the Bay.

About 50,000 more international travelers visited the City by the Bay in June compared to last year.

Judy Stellaga was visiting with her sister and says they both do the touristy things at least once and then does the more fun things for people that have been here before.

When asked if she's been spending any money Judy simply replied, "San Francisco can be expensive".

Laurie Armstrong, Vice President of Public Affairs for the Convention and Visitors Bureau says more airport traffic translates into high hotel occupancy.

"This time of year is traditionally busy. This is the big vacation season and then once we head into September and October we get into really big convention season, so we're on the upswing. We've got Oracle coming back and a lot of other large groups," says Armstrong.

Nearly 14 percent more people have gone through the international terminal to visit this year.
