SF Launches Environmental Website

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ San Francisco is putting a list of cosmetics, hand sanitizers and other products that it considers more eco-friendly online.

The city's Environment Department launched the website, SFApproved.org, on Monday. The site was originally designed for the city's purchasing department, which was required to use green alternatives under a 2005 city ordinance.

But officials decided to open it up to the general public.

The recommendations are based on a review of the products' ingredients, recycled content and energy efficiency among other factors.

The site comes amid growing concern over chemicals in everyday products. San Francisco's green purchasing program manager Chris Geiger says there are tens of thousands of chemicals in the marketplace whose toxicity is unknown.
