Gascon Criticizes Reaction to Tourist's Murder

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)_ San Francisco's police chief is criticizing the community for what he says was an underwhelming reaction to the murder of a German tourist earlier this month.

Investigators at the Hall of Justice say they think they are closing in on an arrest in the case.

Police Chief George Gascon is wondering where the outrage is in response to the killing of Mechthild Schroer.

"I get inundated with e-mails and phone calls often for very minor incidents. I was shocked by the fact that I did not get a single e-mail of anyone being concerned about the fact that this woman lost her life and the way that she did," says Gascon.

Gascon says San Francisco should be angry.

"The community needs to really look at this and evaluate whether we should be so tolerant of this type of behavior," he added.

Meanwhile, San Francisco police are investigating three fatal shootings that happened within a 24-hour period on Thursday and Friday.

Extra officers will be on the streets this weekend and a homicide captain says there will be a zero-tolerance policy for any gang-related activity.
