Vallejo Schools Feeling Loss of Police Presence

VALLEJO, Calif. (KCBS)_ Things are back to normal at Vallejo High School after a Tuesday lunch-hour fight injured two campus supervisors.

Police were called to the school when students exchanged punches with a number of non-students.  Before the city of Vallejo went bankrupt officers were regularly assigned to the campus.

KCBS’ Dave Padilla reports this is a school that lost its police resource officers to budget cuts.

Six to eight non-students got involved in a scuffle with several students. Two campus supervisors sought medical attention and were later released from the hospital. School district spokeswoman Tish Busselle says police were called, but there was a time when they would have already been on campus.

“We used to have police assigned to each of our campuses as many urban school districts do. I believe several years ago there were two police assigned to each of our high-school campuses,” says Busselle.

She says police arrested the non-students.

It’s very difficult for any school to keep non-students off of a campus. We do have a closed campus at lunch and that was very fortunate,” added Busselle.

Budget cuts forced the school district to dispense with having police officers at middle and high schools. Police Lt. Eric Mortenson tells the Times-Herald that on-site officers would have spotted the intruders almost immediately.
