UC and Berkeley Police Patrol Together

Joint patrols will focus alcohol-related offenses such as underage drinking in an effort to make the neighborhood on the south side of the UC Berkeley campus safer.

The patrols, pairing one city police officer with a university police officer, start tonight night will happen every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, said the captain of the UC Berkeley Police Department, Margo Bennett.

There will also be additional officers from both departments patrolling after football games, said Sgt Mary Kusmiss with the Berkeley Police Department.

Students tell KCBS reporter Margie Shafer that although Cal now requires new students to take an online alcohol education course, parties can still get pretty wild as the fall semester gets underway.

Citations for loud and unruly parties start with a $750 fine that can reach $2,500 for subsequent violations during a 120 day period.
