Oakland Parents Continue Their Fight to Keep Childcare Centers Open

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) - Oakland parents and teachers are refusing to accept the school district's decision to spare five preschool centers but close two others. They announced plans to take over one of the threatened centers Monday afternoon in order to keep it open.

"These programs are crucial to education all the way through," declared one teacher. "There's no reason any of them should be closed. They can all be kept open and we demand that that be done.

Oakland Unified School District, meanwhile, explained that with a reduction in funding expected from the state, there's simply no alternative but to shut down the centers, transferring those children to other preschools.

An advocacy group planned to occupy one of the centers when it was scheduled to close, at 4:30 p.m.
