People at Elmhurst Community Prep were disappointed when the school made the list of lowest performing campuses in the state earlier this year.
But just last week, there was excitement when Elmhurst qualified for a three-year, nearly $4 million grant that provides for an extended school day for 6th graders that goes until 5 pm.
The program includes mentoring, sports, and more time for academics.
Amari is one of the students who likes the program.
“They help you with your homework and get to know you,” he said.
Another Oakland middle school, United for Success, also qualified for federal grant money.
