Foreclosure Crisis May Thin Out the Voting Pool

With the November election coming up, there is once again concern that the foreclosure crisis has displaced voters. But, they won’t be shut out, as long as they play by some rules.

First, voters should make sure they establish residency, even if that residency is now owned by the bank.

“Interestingly enough we faced this issue for the presidential election in ’08,” said Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder Steve Weir.

He says the rules have been carefully laid out by the state, and it helps to have property tax statements, and a driver license with the address.

“The old address, even though it’s not yours, is still your domicile,” said Weir.

You can only have one domicile, and you have to register to vote by October 18th.

Weir says that not too many people have been calling to ask about the procedures, but he says homeowners may have other pressing matters on their minds, with a steady stream of foreclosures continuing.
