SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission plans to unveil a proposal Tuesday for a facility near Ocean Beach capable of cleaning and filtering 2 million gallons of wastewater for use on city land.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports it would be the city’s first large-scale water recycling project and would treat enough sewer and storm water each day to keep 1,000 acres of land hydrated.
The newspaper reports the Westside Recycled Water Project would cost an estimated $152 million. Its water would be used for Golden Gate Park, Lincoln Park and the Presidio Golf Course.
The utility has been drawing most of its water from the Tuolumne River since the 1930s.
Conservationists don’t want flowers watered and toilets flushed with pristine mountain water.
