Final Preparation along I-680 for Express Lane

Caltrans crews expect to spend the next several days restriping and testing toll reading equipment on the Bay Area's first express lane.

Solo drivers will soon have the option of paying to drive in a carpool lane that will run on Interstate 680 from Highway 84 in Sunol to Highway 237 in Milpitas.

The express lane will still be free for carpools, although motorists will have to remove their FasTrak transponders to avoid being charged.

The lane will use congestion pricing, with message signs indicating the tolls. Caltrans anticipates the average price will run $5 to $6 to drive the entire 14-mile stretch.
