Man Accused In San Leandro Killing Arrested In Mississippi
SAN LEANDRO (BCN) -- A 20-year-old man who worked at a well-known Oakland nonprofit has been arrested in Mississippi in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in unincorporated San Leandro in March, an Alameda County sheriff's spokesman said Tuesday.
Ernest Holloway had an extradition hearing in Harrison County in Mississippi today and is expected to be extradited to Alameda County soon, sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
Holloway was recently arrested in Biloxi, Miss., on a murder and robbery warrant for the shooting death of 19-year-old Davon Deangelo Mays-Brewster.
Mays-Brewster was killed around 9:30 p.m. on March 24 near 163rd Avenue and East 14th Street in unincorporated San Leandro.
Another suspect, 20-year-old Donald West of Oakland, was arrested on an identical warrant in the 8800 block of MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland on Aug. 10.
Nelson said Mays-Brewster was killed in a robbery that went bad.
He said Holloway, West and Mays-Brewster arranged to meet two victims at a Dominos Pizza in San Leandro under the pretense that Holloway would buy a television from one of the victims.
Once everyone arrived at the meeting place, Holloway removed the TV from the first victim's vehicle while West robbed the first victim at gunpoint and Mays-Brewster robbed the second victim at gunpoint, according to Nelson.
The second victim believed his life was in jeopardy and removed a handgun from his waistband. He shot and killed Mays-Brewster in self-defense, Nelson said.
Although Holloway and West didn't kill Mays-Brewster, they are charged with murder under the state's felony-murder law, which considers it murder to participate in a felony in which someone is killed, Nelson said.
According to the sheriff's office, Holloway worked at the Youth Uprising Center at 8711 MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland.
Youth Uprising is supported by Alameda County and the city of Oakland and offers programs and services "to develop youth leadership in order to transform the community," according to the group's website.
The center has had a number of prominent visitors over the years, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
Youth Uprising officials were unavailable for comment Tuesday.
