Gates Foundation Gives San Francisco A $3 Million Education Grant
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The city of San Francisco has been awarded $3 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help more kids get to-- and get through college.
At a City College news conference, Chancellor Don Griffin said officials at City College have worked for years with the Unified School District to get students to college.
"If we can get this to work across the country it's going to actually change the lives of many, many people whose lives are pretty desperate right now,"he said.
Just 27 percent of San Francisco high school students who go to college get a degree.
Griffin said the grant will go to boosting those numbers.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city's schools are getting better.
"This is the top performing district in the state of California," he said.
The Gates Foundation also awarded $3 million each to the cities of Riverside, Calif., Mesa, Ariz. and New York City.
