Kidnapping Suspect Caught After 2-Hour Peninsula Chase

SAN JOSE (KCBS/BCN) - A kidnapping suspect was hospitalized early Sunday morning after leading police on a chase from San Jose to Daly City and back down I-280 to Woodside.

The ordeal began at 10:27 p.m. Saturday when police received a call that the suspect, a 26-year-old man, had come to the home of his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend on the 1600 block of Waverly Avenue and had forced the woman and their 11-month-old daughter into his pickup truck against their will, according to San Jose police officer Jose Garcia.

The suspect traveled north on U.S. Highway 101 and led police as far north as Daly City, according to Garcia. The suspect then went back south down Interstate Highway 280, Garcia said.

When the suspect reached the overpass at the Woodside Road exit on I-280, he purposely crashed his car to bring the chase to an abrupt halt at 12:11 a.m., Garcia said.

The suspect was injured after he jumped off an overpass, falling 30 feet onto Woodside Road according to Officer Garcia.

"After he crashed his car, he exited, grabbed his ex-girlfriend out of the car and held her at knifepoint for a very brief moment. Then he let her go and jumped over a guard rail from the overcrossing onto a roadway," added Garcia.

Responding officers located the suspect and the two victims and tried to pull the car over, but the suspect refused to stop and tried to flee police.

Several units including a San Jose Police Department helicopter, as well as officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Daly City Police Department were involved in the chase, said Garcia.

The baby girl and her mother were both unharmed in the incident, Garcia said. The suspect was taken to a Bay Area hospital for unknown injuries, he said.

"I know he's alive, I just don't know how seriously he's injured," Garcia said.
