Denied By FEMA, San Bruno Declares Local Emergency

SAN BRUNO (BCN) - The San Bruno City Council has adopted a resolution continuing a declaration of local emergency, even as FEMA has denied a federal major disaster declaration.

San Bruno City Manager Connie Jackson says the demolition of burned homes continues, and they have now destroyed 18.

"Most of the lots are rapidly in the process of being cleared and we're hopeful that within another week, or maybe 10 days, that phase of the process will be completed," said Jackson.

The city will begin working with residents individually to streamline the permit review process for those who wish to rebuild.

Last week FEMA denied the request from the governor for a major disaster declaration.

"It bothers me," said San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane. "It's a monetary thing on one level, but on the other level it's an emotional thing for this city. We should be recognized."

FEMA claims the disaster is not beyond the capabilities of the state and local government. PG&E has given $3 million to the city, and has promised to make available $100 million. It is still unclear how much the disaster will ultimately cost.
