San Francisco Parking Meters Rates Among Highest In Nation

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A new report ranks San Francisco's parking meter rates and fines among the highest in the country.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the survey—prepared by the Board of Supervisors' legislative analyst—found among major U.S. cities only Chicago and Los Angeles charge more than San Francisco to park at a downtown meter.

Outside of the downtown area, San Francisco's rates are the highest.

The report was requested by Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier and looked at parking rates and fines in cities including Boston, Oakland, San Jose, Seattle, Philadelphia, Washington and New York.

It found San Francisco matched New York for the highest meter fine -- $65 in the downtown area.

Alioto-Pier says the report shows San Francisco is "nickel-and-diming people to death." She plans to call a hearing on the topic.
