SAN MATEO (BCN) A Sacramento man who was killed in a fall from a construction beam in San Mateo Friday morning was working on the renovation of the Safeway store in the Woodlake Shopping Center, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health said.

Cristobal Reyes-Segura, 23, was killed in the fall, which was reported around 10 a.m. at the shopping center located at the intersection of Peninsula Avenue and North Delaware Street, San Mateo police said.

Reyes-Segura fell about 15 feet from a side of the Safeway store where he was installing an overhang above a drive-thru window, Cal/OSHA spokesman Dean Fryer said.

Fryer said Cal/OSHA officials responded to the scene Friday and will be investigating the incident in the coming days and weeks.

“We’ve got to look at all the issues, if there was fall protection, what training was provided,” Fryer said. “We’ll be talking to the employer and other employees” to find out what happened.

S.D. Deacon was the primary contractor for the construction project, while Norogachi Construction was a subcontractor, Fryer said.

He did not know which company Reyes-Segura worked for, and said that will be one of the first things Cal/OSHA looks at during the investigation.

There are many middle-aged and retired construction workers. It’s only dangerous when people get careless.
