CBS 5 Poll: Harmer Could Unseat McNerney

(CBS 5) - The third time may be the charm for Republican David Harmer as he tries to get elected to Congress, according to a KPIX-TV CBS 5 poll released Tuesday.

The poll, conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA, found Harmer edges out Democratic Congressman Jerry McNerney in California's 11th congressional district by 48% to 42%.

Among men, Harmer leads by 20 points, while among women, McNerney leads by six – a 26-point gender gap, the polling data showed.

Harmer has a bubble of support among voters ages 35 to 49, but the poll found the candidates were effectively even among older voters.

Harmer, who previously ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Utah's 2nd District in 1996 and in California's neighboring 10th Congressional District in a special election last year, takes 8 of 10 Republican votes. Meantime, McNerney, who is seeking a third term, takes 8 of 10 Democratic votes. Independents break 5:3 for the Republican, according to the poll.

SurveyUSA polled 624 likely voters from California's 11th Congressional District from 10/08/10 through 10/11/10. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus four percent.
