San Francisco Hilton Hotel Workers Go On Strike

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Several hundred hotel workers began a six-day strike on Wednesday at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco.

This is just the latest in a rash of walkouts by Unite Here Local 2 to draw attention to ten hotels on its boycott list.

Union spokeswoman Riddhi Mehta-Neugebauer said the group's actions at the Hilton are having an impact.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"We're asking customers to check out and move to any other San Francisco hotel that's not facing any labor disputes," she said.

Hilton General Manager Michael Dunne said replacement workers have been brought in to perform the jobs of employees on strike. But the actions are hurting San Francisco's number one industry: tourism.

"Local 2 in San Francisco has been on strike, boycotted or had some labor action three of the last six years," said Dunne. "It is not good for the city."

The six-day strike is over both salary and health benefits and no talks are in the pipeline.
