Santa Cruz Councilman Skips Court In Reckless Driving Case

SANTA CRUZ (AP) -- Records show an arrest warrant was issued for a Santa Cruz councilman who skipped a court appearance in a reckless driving case.

Councilman Tony Madrigal was behind the wheel of his Toyota Prius when he was pulled over Aug. 30 because the California Highway Patrol said he was typing on his laptop, texting, impeding traffic, swerving and driving along the center divider.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel said Madrigal failed to show up for arraignment last month and an arrest warrant was issued. The warrant was recalled Oct. 8 and Madrigal pleaded not guilty to the charges a week later.

His next court appearance is Nov. 10. If convicted, Madrigal faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
