'Spider Dan' Faces Trial For Climbing San Francisco Skyscraper
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- A daredevil who suction-cupped his way to the top of a 58-story building in San Francisco last month will now have to scale the justice system.
Daniel Dale Goodwin, 54, also known as "Spider Dan," was arrested after his successful three-hour climb up the outside of the Millennium Tower luxury condominium complex on the afternoon of Sept. 6.
Goodwin was arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court Wednesday morning on charges of being a public nuisance, unauthorized entry of a dwelling, and resisting, obstructing or delaying police, all misdemeanors.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges and is scheduled for trial on Nov. 19, district attorney's office spokesman Seth Steward said.
Penalties for misdemeanor offenses range from probation to a year in county jail and a $1,000 fine.
Goodwin, who waved an American flag at the conclusion of the stunt, said the climb was meant to draw attention to the vulnerability of skyscrapers to terrorist attacks. He also said that as a cancer survivor, he wanted to raise awareness about the disease.
The Millennium Tower, located at 301 Mission St. in the city's South of Market neighborhood, is the fourth-tallest building in the city, and the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi.
Steward said Goodwin was ordered by the court Wednesday to stay away from the building.
Goodwin previously scaled Chicago's Sears Tower and the north tower of the World Trade Center.
