Prison Time Urged For Ex-BART Officer Mehserle

OAKLAND (AP) - Prosecutors asked a judge to issue a prison sentence to former BART officer Johannes Mehserle, who was videotaped shooting an unarmed passenger on the Fruitvale platform on New Year's Day 2009.

The recommendation filed Tuesday in Los Angeles argues against defense's request for probation for Mehserle. Prosecution did not specify how much prison time it wanted the judge to issue.

Mehserle faces up to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 5

Mehserle was convicted in July of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on New Year's Day 2009. The shooting was videotaped by a handful of bystanders.

The trial was moved from Alameda County to Los Angeles because of racial tension and extensive media coverage in the Bay Area.
