Campaign Watchdog Rejects Kamala Harris Negative Ad Complaint

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- California's campaign watchdog has rejected a complaint by the Democratic candidate for attorney general over an attack ad aired by a national Republican organization.

The Fair Political Practices Commission said in a letter Tuesday that the television ad by the Republican State Leadership Committee does not meet the state's current definition of a campaign commercial.

A rule that establishes a tighter definition will take effect after next week's election.

The committee's chairman is Ed Gillespie, who was a White House counselor in the George W. Bush administration. The group's ad attacks Democrat Kamala Harris for personally opposing executions, even though she says she would enforce the death penalty if elected.

Her campaign filed a second complaint over the ad on Tuesday.

The group favors Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley.
