BERKELEY (AP) – A man shot to death near a Berkeley street corner has been identified as the son of a drug rehabilitation expert, who acknowledged the man had fallen into addiction.

The San Francisco Chronicle says the Alameda County coroner’s office identified the man as 35-year-old Gary Ferguson Jr., of Oakland.

Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss says a second man injured in the shooting Tuesday underwent surgery at a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Police say the victims appear to have been targeted; witnesses say they heard at least a dozen gunshots. Authorities hope nearby surveillance video will help provide descriptions of the shooters.

Ferguson’s father, Gary Sr., was once director of the Sobriety Through Education and Peer Support program.

Malcolm X

Well, at least there is one less dope-crazed fiend ruining the possibility of a peaceful, safe South Berkeley/North Oakland. The only person who will miss this miscreant is the dope dealer.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

People like this are the ones making me spin in my grave. Please get rid of these low-lifes who are keeping the community in the trash heap. I didn’t work all those years and sacrifice my life just to see jerks like this menace our Aafrican American neighborhoods. This gentleman and his ilk are the ones who need to be drummed out of the community.

Meg Whitman

It’s hard to feel any compassion for these criminals, who think nothing of terrorizing and murdering for something as minor as a ten dollar debt. Time to eradicate all these vermin. Vote for me.
