San Francisco Sets New Transit Goal

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco Supervisors have endorsed an ambitious goal to increase the use of bicycles as an alternative form of transportation.

It's estimated that seven percent of travel in San Francisco is already by bike.

But the new resolution by the Board of Supervisors would set a goal to increase this rate to 20 percent by 2020.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Supervisor David Chiu introduced the piece of legislation earlier this month with no opposition.

"I understand that a 20 percent goal may be a stretch, but it is something that has been accomplished in a number of cities in Europe," said Chiu. "And there are a number of cities throughout the United States that are in front of us at this time."

The city is expecting to get some help meeting the goal from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which has just approved a $4.3 million regional bike-share pilot program.

Through the program, San Francisco would get 500 bikes that people could use for a nominal fee to get around the city.

The bikes would be housed at 50 different locations throughout San Francisco.
