Judge Temporarily Delays Funding Cuts For CalWORKS

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Funding cuts that were scheduled to go in effect Monday to a state program that provides child care assistance to low-income families have been at least temporarily delayed.

Alameda Superior Court Judge Wynne Carvill on Friday issued an order temporarily halting the cuts to CalWORKs until a Thursday hearing on the merits of the lawsuit that was filed over plans to pull the program's funding.

The Sacramento Bee reports that $256 million for the program was set to be eliminated when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto to cut $960 million from the state's budget.

The judge's order comes after a group called Parent Voices Oakland and four parents expecting to lose child care filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education seeking to delay the implementation of the cuts.
