From Larry Magid’s Hi Tech Reports

(KCBS) – The editor of Cooks Source, a food magazine distributed in western New England, reportedly expressed no remorse when a blogger whose online article on apple pie recipes showed up in the print edition of the magazine inquired about compensation for what she’d written.

Numerous blog reports indicate editor Judith Griggs scoffed at publishing an apology and donating $130 to the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Posts on several Websites quote an e-mail where Griggs instead suggested author Monica Gaudio compensate the magazine for editing and improving her piece.

Since the matter exploded on Cooks Source’s Facebook page, some have questioned whether the e-mail response widely circulated genuinely originated with Griggs.

Whatever the case, says KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid, the situation is reminder that lifting copyrighted material from the Internet, although easy, is not legal even if the original content is available free of charge.
