McNerney Maintains Slight Lead In East Bay Congressional Race

SACRAMENTO (AP) - A Democratic congressman from the East Bay is maintaining a slight lead over his Republican challenger, with thousands of ballots still uncounted.

Three days after the election, Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney is ahead of San Ramon attorney David Harmer by 441 votes out of about 176,000 cast in the 11th District.

The secretary of state's office on Friday reported that the district's four counties have more than 376,000 absentee and provisional ballots left to process. The district includes parts of those counties.

Local election officials say the outstanding ballots will add at least 15,000 votes to the 11th District tally.

An additional race, in the Central Valley's 20th District, also remains too close to call. Republican Andy Vidak currently leads Democratic Rep. Jim Costa by a little more than 1,800 votes.
