Go Inside Jerry Garcia's $4 Million Marin Home Up For Sale

MARIN (CBS) -- Would-be home buyers now have a chance to taste the high life, Grateful Dead-style: Jerry Garcia's mansion is for sale.

The 11-acre estate located at 55 El Mirador in Nicasio in rural Marin County was the bandleader's last home before he died of a heart attack in 1995 at age 53.

The sellers are asking just shy of $4 million for the 7,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style home built in 1989 and surrounding grounds.

The real estate listing describes amenities such as a 1,500-square-foot artist's studio, a solar-heated pool - with a zip-line running over it - and an organic garden.

It also contains five bedrooms and five bathrooms, three fireplaces, a five-car garage and palm-tree lined driveway.

The estate has 300-degree views that span the Berkeley skyline to the Pacific Ocean, including Mount Tamalpais.

Henry Koltys bought the house from the musician's estate in 1997 and renovated it.

In recent years, Koltys sold many of the fixtures — including the guitarist's toilet for $2,500 — to raise money for charity.

Koltys also offered up the home's kitchen sink, Jacuzzi and stereo speakers in online auctions.

The sales of the fixtures benefited the Sophia Foundation, a San Francisco Bay area non-profit that aids children and families during marital separations and divorces.

Koltys, who is the foundation's chairman, said the effort allowed him "to combine my interest in protecting and helping these families and my love for Jerry Garcia's music."
