Neil Young Rock Memorabilia Damaged In San Carlos Fire

SAN CARLOS (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) --Authorities were trying to determine the cause of a two-alarm fire Tuesday at a San Carlos warehouse that caused about $1 million in damage, much of it to memorabilia belonging to rock singer Neil Young.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 3 a.m. at the 10,000-square-foot building at 593 Quarry Road where Young and his family kept six vintage cars and other memorabilia such as paintings and pictures, Belmont-San Carlos Fire Chief Doug Fry said.

While some crews began tackling the blaze at the front of the warehouse, Fry said others went to the back to try to pull items out. It's not clear how much of the memorabilia was salvaged.

The fire was extinguished by 3:45 a.m. and no one was injured.

The fire started inside the building, but officials said the exact cause remained under investigation. The blaze caused about $250,000 in damage to the building and $750,000 in damage to its contents.

KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:

Fire officials were working with Young's representatives to remove what was left. Authorities estimated that at least 70 percent of the rented warehouse's contents were salvageable.

"A lot of the belongings have been saved, but there was still a lot of damage done," said Belmont-San Carlos Fire Marshal Jim Palisi.

Young rented the warehouse and lives nearby in the unincorporated San Mateo County community of La Honda.
