Oakland Police Shoot, Kill Parolee In Domestic Dispute

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) --Oakland police said two officers shot and killed a parolee after he fled on foot and appeared to be reaching toward his waistband.

Deputy Chief Jeff Israel refused to say Tuesday whether a weapon was found on Derrick Jones' body after Monday night's shooting in the 5800 block of Trask Street.

However, an attorney for the family of the 37-year-old Oakland man claimed witnesses he had spoken to said that Jones was not armed and was not reaching toward his waistband when officers opened fire.

Police said officers were responding about 9:40 p.m. to reports of a domestic dispute between Jones and a woman when he fled on foot. Israel said that during the chase, an officer saw a metal object in Jones' hand.

Multiple officers fired rounds from their service pistols, and the gunfire hit the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured, and their names had not been released as of Tuesday.

The investigation into the shooting was ongoing and authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Oakland Police Department's homicide section at (510) 238-3821.
