Two Killed, Police Station Trashed In Vacaville Rampage
VACAVILLE (CBS 5 / BCN) – Two people were killed and one was injured during a triple shooting in Vacaville. The suspect was behind bars Tuesday after he walked into the police station with a gun.
The suspect, Richard Ruben Calkins, of Vacaville, was subdued with a Taser gun and taken into custody when he showed up at the Vacaville Police Department early Tuesday morning shortly after the shooting, which occurred in the 500 block of William Street about 1:50 a.m.
KCBS’ Dave Padilla Reports:
Calkins and the three shooting victims, all believed to be in their early 20s, were in an apartment at the complex at the time of the shooting, Lt. Randy Weaver said.
The woman was found outside the apartment and the two men were found inside. The men were pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with injuries that were not life-threatening, Vacaville city spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.
Police have not stated a motive for the shootings, but Weaver said the suspect and the victims knew each other.
After the shootings, Calkins showed up at the Police Department about three blocks away, Mazzaferro said. The door to the station is normally locked but the man pulled on the door and it opened, Mazzaferro said.
“The door didn’t close when the last person left. They were having trouble with the door,” Mazzaferro said.
Calkins allegedly broke two windows inside the Police Department lobby and broke another window facing the street by throwing a gun at it, Mazzaferro said.
He then left the lobby and was shot with a Taser by police outside after he refused officers’ commands to put his hands up and get on the ground, Weaver said.
Calkins fell and struck his head on the stairs of the police station after he was shot with the Taser, and was taken to a hospital, Mazzaferro said.
The Solano County coroner’s office recovered the bodies of the two men from the apartment complex about 1 p.m., Mazzaferro said.
The victims’ names had not yet been released.
