San Francisco Fire Department Adds New Twist To Holiday Toy Drive

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco Fire Department has asked the community to dig a bit deeper this holiday season. In addition to its annual toy drive, firefighters put a call out for donations of toiletries for the homeless.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Among the requested items: antiperspirant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair conditioner and shampoo.

The toys - and toiletries - were being collected at all fire stations in San Francisco. The toiletries would be given to a community organization, tasked with distributing them to the homeless.

"I think people are a lot more sensitive to the needs of others. Just about everybody has felt some sort of need over the last few years," suggested Fire Department spokeswoman, Lt. Mindy Talmdage.

Donations were being welcomed through the end of December.
