Bay Area Shoppers Asked To Honor Mom And Pop Shops

WILLOW GLEN (KCBS) - In the great tradition of Black Friday and Cyber Monday now comes Small Business Saturday. It was created by American Express to help out independently-owned businesses.

Robin Levine, co-owner of Details, a clothing store that's been a fixture on Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen for the last 15 years said that it's important for residents to support their local retailers.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

"It's most important to shop locally to keep the money in the area so we can do the improvements that we need," said Levine. "We're in an historic downtown on Lincoln Avenue and if those tax dollars come back to us we could see better sidewalks, and better lighting."

The Willow Glen Business Association is stressing that it's the personal touch that matters.

"You're dealing almost always directly with the business owner, or at least one layer away from the business owner, so they understand the importance of getting that customer back," said Norma Ruiz with the WGBA.

She said that you'll never get the same quality of customer service at big box stores.
